The Varsity and Junior Varsity teams from Fishers High School Rugby Club in Fishers, IN, embarked on an unforgettable trip to Ireland this past spring that included great matches against local teams and even better sightseeing and immersion into the local Irish culture. The trip took place March 31-April 9 and the team visited Dublin and Galway in Ireland with Dublin being the first stop on this remarkable tour. As soon as the team arrived in Dublin they went straight from the airport to a sold out Aviva Stadium in Dublin, home of the Irish National Rugby side, to watch a pro match between Leinster Rugby and the Wasps from England. The Fishers High School teams played a match against County Carlow’s Rugby teams in which the Varsity team won handily and the JV team lost in a close match. The teams also got to train with coaches from the Irish professional club Leinster Rugby along with the former IRFU Coach Jerry Murphy! Sightseeing was aplenty in Dublin also as the group saw the Dublin Castle, Christ Church Cathedral, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Guinness Brewery and Storehouse and toured Croke Park, home of Ireland Gaelic Games.
Next up for the teams was a visit Galway, which is about a 2 hour drive from Dublin on the West Coast of Ireland. On the way to Galway the group made a stop at the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher. In Galway, both teams played two games, one game against Crescent College and one game against Castlebar Rugby Club. The Varsity team split the two games which were both very close. While in Galway the group did a day trip Limerick where they made a stop at Bunratty Castle along the way and made stops in several picturesque towns along the Irish West Coast. The group had plenty of time to explore Galway and stroll along High Street taking in all of its shops, restaurants, and typical Irish pubs along the way.
Coach John Harley said of the trip, “Many thanks to Ireland for being a great place to visit and special thanks to our Premier International Tours tour guides Desmond Murphy and Sean Townsend for their work in making this trip such a great experience for the team!”
